Paddle board fishing provides anglers with a whole new perspective on fishing and allows them to explore new areas while enjoying the serenity of being out on the water.

  1. What to expect in spring paddle board fishing.

You should expect a fun and exciting time out in nature, with the opportunity for some epic fishing tales, although you also need to expect bad weather, cold water and more that we will touch on later in the article. The one thing that should be an almost guarantee is you should expect to have fin and make great memories.

Getting Started.

  1. Choosing the right paddle board for fishing. Size and shape: Paddle boards come in different sizes and shapes, depending on the user's weight, skill level, and purpose. For fishing, you want a paddle board that is stable, buoyant and has enough space for you, your gear, and your catch. A wider, longer paddleboard will provide more stability and weight capacity but may be less maneuverable. Ignore any inflatable paddle boards for sup fishing that have less than three layers of military-grade PVC and less than 450 pounds of weight capacity. Material: Paddleboards can be made of inflatable or rigid materials, such as PVC, foam, or fiberglass. Inflatable paddleboards are more portable, durable, and affordable, but may be less rigid than hard paddleboards, while solid paddle boards are always ready to go, an inflatable is the best choice for paddle board fishing with the ease of transportation, storage space, and that inflatable sup fishing boards are more stable than a solid paddle board.

  2. Necessary equipment for paddle board fishing. The necessary equipment is pretty straightforward, a fishing license, rod, reel, and string along with bait, lures, and hooks. A life jacket, ankle leash, cooler, paddle board, and paddle. A net will be of great use as well.

  1. How to properly mount your fishing gear on the paddle board. A quality paddle board will have gear mounts, front, and rear bungee storage as well as d rings to accommodate all your sup fishing gear.

Spring Challenges.

Weather challenges to consider. The spring season brings with it unpredictable weather patterns, making it necessary to plan your paddleboard fishing adventure carefully. Some of the weather challenges to watch out for include:

  1. Cold Weather.

While the temperatures may be rising, spring mornings and evenings can still be chilly. Dressing warmly is essential, especially when out on the water. Wear layers of clothing that you can take off as the day gets warmer.

  1. Wind.

The spring season is known for unpredictable wind patterns, which can make paddling a bit challenging. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and plan your fishing trip accordingly. Avoid paddling in strong winds as it can make it difficult to stay balanced on your paddleboard.

  1. Rain.

Springtime also brings with it the possibility of rain. Check the forecast and plan your fishing trip on a day with low chances of rainfall. If it does rain, ensure you have a waterproof jacket and bag to keep your gear dry.

  1. Water conditions to watch out for.

As the snow melts and the water levels rise, the water conditions during the spring season can be unpredictable. Here are some of the water conditions to watch out for:

  1. Strong Currents.

The spring season brings with it strong currents, especially in rivers and streams. Before heading out, check the water levels and currents to ensure you can handle the conditions. Avoid going out if the currents are too strong for your skill level.

  1. Murky Water.

The melting snow and ice can make the water murky, reducing visibility. As a result, it can be challenging to see rocks, logs, and other obstacles in the water. Wear polarized sunglasses to help you see through the murky water.

  1. Cold Water.

The water may still be cold during spring, and falling in can be dangerous, especially if you're not wearing the right gear. Wear a wetsuit to keep you warm in case you fall in the water. Also, ensure you have a way to get back on your paddleboard if you fall in.

  1. Safety Precautions for Spring Paddle Board Fishing.

To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable paddleboard fishing adventure during the spring season, here are some safety precautions to consider:

  1. Wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Action mounts are one of the many advantages the Glide O2 Angler has over other vessels and many boats including a hard board, flat bottom is better than a displacement hull especially in shallow water, general rule is the O2 Angler is the best fishing sup for doing things outdoors and is the right equipment for you to stand up paddle board

Wearing a PFD is essential, especially during the spring season, when the water may still be cold. A PFD will help keep you afloat if you fall in the water and can't get back on your paddleboard. A Coast Guard approved life jacket is also required to have in the US to avoid being ticketed.

  1. Bring a First Aid Kit.

Accidents can happen, and having a first aid kit on hand can be lifesaving. Pack a first aid kit that includes bandages, antiseptic, and other essentials.

  1. Check Your Gear.

Before heading out, check your paddleboard, fishing gear, and other equipment to ensure they are in good condition. Also, ensure you have the right gear for the conditions you will be fishing in.

  1. Know Your Limits.

Paddleboard fishing during the spring season can be challenging, even for experienced anglers. Know your limits and don't push yourself beyond them. If you're a beginner, consider taking a course or going out with an experienced paddler.

  1. Bring a Buddy.

It's always safer to paddle with a buddy, especially during the spring season when the water conditions can be unpredictable. Bring a friend along, or join a local paddleboard fishing group to ensure you have someone to help you in case of an emergency.

  1. Stay Hydrated.

It's easy to get dehydrated when you're out in the sun for hours, especially during the spring season when the temperatures can rise quickly. Bring plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the day.

  1. Know the Rules and Regulations.

Different bodies of water may have specific rules and regulations that you need to follow when fishing. Research the area you'll be fishing in advance, and ensure you have the necessary permits and licenses.

Techniques for Paddle Board Fishing

  1. Casting techniques from a paddle board.

SUPs offer a top-down perspective, allowing for a more comprehensive view of the water beneath you. Top-down casting technique involves standing on your paddle board and casting your line towards the water. As you reel in, you can monitor your bait, lure or fly as it moves through the water. This is usually the easiest technique for those new to sup fishing.

  1. Trolling techniques from a paddle board.

This is one of my favorite ways to fish from my Glide O2 Angler fishing sup as it lets me paddle board and get a workout in while fishing. Set your fishing rod or rods depending on locale regulations in the fishing rod holders and let out the amount of line needed to reach your target species. And then simply paddle and have fun. I have seen some let the line out on the deck of the board and let the lure drag the line off as they paddle. Some let all the line out in the water and then paddle. While I paddle with a rod releasing the line as I go and once the right amount is in the water, I place my rod in the rod holder.

  1. Bait selection for paddle board fishing.

Fresh air,big fish may make you fall overboard, tackle box,dip net for live bait, sun protection, use an inflatable and avoid needing a roof rack, read our beginners guide to a big catch, use scotty mounts, attachment points and a life vest in rough waters a milk crate is great.

This will depend on what fish you are targeting and if you are sup fishing, or sup fly fishing. Our blog has all sorts of sup fishing tips for you.

  1. Tips for landing your catch on the paddle board.

Let the fish play itself out and then reel it toward the sup, once it is in range of the sup we recommend using a net or a fishing gaff to land the fish. Unless you are doing catch and release then the gaff should not be used.

Conclusion.

Fishing from a paddle board can be a rewarding and exciting experience, especially during the spring when many species are actively feeding.
