How to remove a fin from a US-style fin box.

If you’re changing the fins on your paddle boards, you’ll need to know how to remove a fin from a US-style fin box. Fin boxes are plastic, aluminum, or fiberglass receptacles that hold the fin in place. They come in a range of sizes, shapes, and materials and are usually located on the bottom of the surfboard. Removing a fin from a US-style fin box requires a few basic steps.1

1.) Prep.

Start by preparing your work area. You’ll need a towel to protect the surface of your paddle board if you have a lesser durable board and a fin key to remove the fin. Place the towel on the surface of the board and locate the fin box.

Next, locate the fin key slots on the fin box. The fin key slots will be located on the sides of the fin box and are usually marked with a circle or an arrow.

Once you’ve located the fin key slots, insert the fin key into one of the slots and turn it counterclockwise. This will loosen the fin and allow you to remove it. Make sure to keep the fin key straight and turn it slowly to avoid damaging the fin box.

Once you’ve loosened the fin, you can pull it out of the fin box. Be careful not to pull the fin too hard, as this could cause damage to the fin and the fin box.

3.) Clean.

After you’ve removed the fin, you can clean the fin box with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water. This will help prevent corrosion and buildup in the fin box and make it easier to insert the new fin.

Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing the new fin and be sure to use the correct fin key.
